In the olden days, jazz musicians had problems getting heard over wind instruments or pianists with their acoustic instruments. They had to get louder somehow! The popular instrument was developed step by step from the original acoustic guitar. That is why the term e-guitar doesn't just cover the good old electric guitar, but also the whole bandwidth of acoustic jazz guitars, right up to guitars completely without a sound box.
