Several decades have passed since the black light tube found its way into many teenagers' rooms as a decorative element. Since time immemorial, the UV light still causes astonished looks in discotheques, bars and at parties in the in-house party cellar. What exactly is black light?

Black light is the colloquial name for ultraviolet radiation, also known as UV radiation. It occurs naturally as a component of solar radiation, but can be artificially generated with black light tubes and black light LEDs. It is electromagnetic radiation that lies outside the light spectrum visible to humans. UV radiation therefore only develops its full effect in darkened environments and together with special substances.

Black light - a highlight for special occasions

In discotheques, black light is considered a popular show effect that gives the location a very special ambience. On its own, however, it appears rather inconspicuous, since the light is barely visible to the human eye. Only in combination with neon colors or white clothing does the effect really come into its own. UV lamps stimulate the fluorescent materials to glow, which creates particularly intense and strong colors. In dark rooms, this creates strong contrasts that, in combination with other lighting effects, put the audience in a celebratory mood. When using them, however, you must make sure that other light elements do not shine too brightly, otherwise the effect of the black light will be reduced.

UV light with LEDs

While black light used to be generated mainly with special discharge lamps, today there are various light sources to choose from. Energy-saving lamps were long considered the non plus ultra of the UV light effect, as they emit very little ambient light. The situation is different with incandescent bulbs and reflector lamps, which envelop the room in a dark blue light. Like so many devices in lighting technology, UV lamps nowadays work with LEDs, for which there are numerous good reasons Besides the low cost, black light is inexpensive to purchase due to LED technology and convinces with low energy consumption as well as a long lighting duration. On the other hand, the variant is significantly more robust than conventional fluorescent tubes and, on top of that, provides a particularly pure UV light with first-class brightness.
