Under a certain pressure, an inert gas - often argon or krypton - serves as a lighter ignition so that the electrodes at the ends of the G5 fluorescent tube are energised. As a result, the mercury vapour spreads UV radiation when it is discharged. Different colour variations can be achieved depending on the fluorescent mixture.
